ROPE FRAME CAGE TO TAKE THE PLACE OF FISHPEN

Mayor Benjamin S. Lim of Dagupan City is inclined to adopt the rope frame cage technology to take the place of fishpens after discussing with Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 1 Director Nestor D. Domenden recently aabout environment-friendly fish structures suited for the rivers here.

Domenden, in his media presentation, recommended to Lim the rope frame cage technology as a replacement to the fishpen, which causes siltation in the river.

He said that the technology is very flexible.

Domenden said that the technology costs 45.000 pesos, but in comparison, the cage is far better because it is not an agent of siltation.

City Agriculture Officer Emma Molina, who was also present in the meeting, said that the city is now considering the new technology as an option to ensure the rivers’ sustainability.

“We are now scheduled to conduct a site validation and reconnaissance on January 25 in the areas which used to be the spot for fish cages or ‘bilayan’,” said Molina. (CIO – Joseph C. Bacani)
