BSP urges public to use coins

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has urged the public to bring out their coins and use them.

Beta Cervantes, BSP deputy director for Dagupan branch, said the problem on lack of coins would slowly ease out as the bank is poised to issue an ample amount of coins this year.

Cervantes said the circulation of the coins stops at a certain level as these are kept in piggy banks and in church donation boxes.

She reiterated the need for coins and their importance in the market, primary of which is for business operators to be able to give the exact amount of change to consumers.

“Nananawagan kami sa publiko na ilabas ang kanilang mga barya at huwag itago para magamit at mag-circulate,” she explained.

Cervantes said coins are in demand in Visayas and Mindanao where automatic water machines need a peso coin to vend drinking water. (Venus H. Sarmiento)
