What's A Droid?

Dear Google,

One of my favorite movie lines is, “In 2015 Skynet became aware...and determined that humans were a virus.”  I never understood how a bunch of giant super computers, networked to desktop and laptop computers, could ever “do” anything, let alone take over the world.  Then came the Droid and it all became crystal clear.  I have not seen anything this huge since the Internet went public and I don’t want to miss it.

A giant Droid appears on the oh-so-blissful smart-phone world and crushes it.  Fifty percent ownership and the “Android Market” is only one year old.  Who would buy a Symbian?  But that, dear Google, is just the tip of the iceberg.  Droid user “training wheels.”  And going for the wallet as Act II, priceless.  Who gets to pitch the wallet to the nation’s casinos?  Time to rewrite the gaming industry software.

Yes, I want to Beta Test Droid Home.  Not just so my kitchen app(liance)s can sing “Happy Birthday” in four part harmony, but useful stuff too.  Like managing the power consumption of my home apps the way Droid manages my phone apps.  But predicting my future needs is where our bread is buttered.  If I have tickets to a show on Saturday night, do I need something to wear, somewhere to eat or somewhere to park?  What’s happening after the show?  Don’t bludgeon me with ads, toast me, tastefully.  Droid knows I’m crazy about sushi.

If I was listening to country music in the house, chances are I will want to hear the same play list in my car.  When I snap my Droid into my dashboard, I expect mirrors, temperature and seats to adjust to me.  I realize cars already monitor miles per gallon, oil level, etc., but just like radar detectors, the User Interface should be totally in the mobile device .

This is not the proper time or place to discuss Droid in the bedroom and we’ll save Google TV for another letter.

What part of my life have I left out? Hmm.  The bathroom.  There is nothing we can do to a toilet, that has not been done in Japan.  Except Droidify it.  Of course it adjusts to my preferences for temperature, lighting and music but it’s...boring.

How about a “combat vest” which senses projectile penetration, provides immediate first aid, monitors vital signs while simultaneously “broadcasting an intent” to team members and HQ?  The intent receiver may be handling more than one message, so the master app will perform triage.  This could have civilian application leading to better medical machine inter-operability.

Or Droid could monitor the wind speed and shift the gears on my personal sized wind turbine to achieve peak efficiency.  Of course I want an app to be able to see the amount of energy and money each wind turbine is generating.

So now we have Droid interfaced to banking, my house, car and the energy grid.  I fear EMP more than the network becoming aware, but I’ll keep my @Override button close, just in case.

Ahl be back,

Perk
