October Worldwide LED TV Shipments Exceeded 10 Million

According to Displaybank “Monthly FPD TV Shipments Data” report, LED TV shipments in October 2011 increased by 3% M-o-M and 98% Y-o-Y, recording 10.1M units. The Worldwide LED TV shipments in October 2011 exceeded 10M units for the first time.
As LED BLU is adopted to premium products such as 3D and Smart TV by default, shipments proportion of LED TV is increasing continuously. Also, LED TV demand is steadily increasing as the price difference between LED and CCFL BLU gets narrowed. LED BLU adoption rate of LCD TV has increased from 32% in the beginning of the year to 48% in October.
Overall LCD TV shipments has stopped at the 15M units per month level since March but increased sharply in September, and recording 20.9M units in October as it continues increased level. This can be due to demand in preparation of Chinese National Day and increasing demand for Black Friday and year-end sales of North America. We estimated 2011 total LCD TV shipments to be 203M units.
If you take a look at October LCD TV shipments share by brand, Samsung is maintaining No. 1 position with 22% and LG Electronics is ranked at the 2nd with 13%, followed by Sony and Toshiba, recording 9% and 8%, respectively.
October worldwide flat TV (LCD, PDP) shipments increased by 11% Y-o-Y, recording the maximum value so far this year with 22.67M units.

Clear Motion Rate (CMR) is Samsung's more comprehensive and accurate measure for how well an LCD or LED TV can display fast-moving images. But for the movie, I think the new era is every TV makers will consider to have the TV connected to the internet for their hi end TV series.
Some of the older product may go away in 3-5 years, such as the hub or your cable box, your Now TV programme, your in house satellite TV.  As we know that all TV network are trying to bond you wiht 18 months contract... we have to wait for the contract to expire.
The new studio home of the new age will have only likely an Apple MacBook Air, a iPhone and a Smart TV…
The new replacement will be a Smart TV or Internet TV …by Samsung, Sony or other up coming electronic giants who will invest their own system to get a license with Samsung and Sony for franchised operation. This will not be the repeated failure of Beta Max versus the VHC C in 1985. People will try to come into a new Business-network that is best for their benefit and sales revenue growth.
When People buy TV they will plan for next 4 years. So they will consider if that is upgradable to be going Internet, no… then why not I buy a Sony Internet TV… is that a smart TV that can replace all smart phones, iphone at home after work…. Yes, then I should buy a Smart TV.
So eventually when one get home, he has to switch on his TV,,, browsing facebook, watching hottest Youtube video of the day, one of his favourite movie in the week… this is the life of the new era generation!
As for LED business, the new trend that may create for demand for LED assembly as this LED will help to create better , brighter, faster picture and so called Micro dimming capability.
If the SmartTV and Internet TV would be having a larger penetration percentage than other TV in this lines.. This will indicate the market growth for the LED for Back light market will be revived! Let’s watch out on this…

LCD TV (LED) Back Lit unit design changes 2009-2012

Since Samsung had made a great success to create a hit in the new LCD TV using LED as the backlight in March 2009, the market accepted the Back light using LED for the LCD TV, by the LG had come up closely with similar design.
The very first LED TV used a lot of LEDs, there are three major type of Back light unit for LCD TV.Namely RGB direct LED back light, which has the best performance as it is true local dimming design, typical Hi end Product like Song , Samsung 9 series and Sharp.

The White LED direct back light, less colourful but true second order local dimming,
Samsung 8 series and LG top series TV are made with this design. Take for an Example LG top series LCD TV using up 24 pieces of 5252 LEDs in one section, they separate the whole 40” TV into 140 sections, so the Whole 40” TV has to be inserted with 3,360 Leeds (24x140). That will incur a very high cost in the Back Light modules.
The lower end model will use side lit unit,
Samsung, LG, Sony, Philips, JVC, Toshiba, Hisense, Haier…etc…
These use up 6 LED bars x 4 sides, they may use up 400 LEDs on LG LCD TV.

We know that the Chip supply is very tight since the Q4 of 2009, until Q1 2010, it seems do not improve much on the number of LEDs.. Gradually they reduce the LED bar to one on each side in 2010, and moreover they plan to further reduce to one bar on one side of the TV, thus to reduce the number of the LED in a TV.
This is an effective cost reduction programme, and at the same time reduces the pressure for the up stream food chain of LED supply.
Performance wise, as I always said that will be less as good as the older version.

This is the natural product phenomenon of any electronics Industry, the first generation is usually be topped up with the best technology and the best components, once the market is developed, the supplier would consider to cut dwon the material cost by using other technology or less component thus to drive down the cost . Thus the products will be more affordable and the market will be further expanded because of wider adoption rate.

Side Effect
May need higher intensity LED.

Heat management has to be improved as they are being squeezed into one LED bar on one side of the LCD TV.

The Cost down is significant LED BLU at $229 in 2009 will be lowered to $126 in 2010 43% cost down for 40” LCD TV’ according to Display Bank studies.


The continuous market for LCD TV s not just LED BLU, but with 3D as the new sales gadget. Recently, LG has launched the largest 3D TV 62” with full LED blu. Market size of LED LCD TV in 2010 to be 32M units that grow 9 times Y/Y and this correspond to 19% of the total LCD TV market size.

World Thinnest LCD TV : 3.9mm

For the Competition of LCD TV, After Samsung, Then LG, JVC, now Samsung Electronics Co Ltd unveiled its "world's thinnest" 3.9mm-thick 40-inch full-HD LCD panel for TVs at FPD International Oct 2009.

To achieve the thinness, Samsung Electronics made improvements to the optical elements so that LED light efficiently and evenly comes to the liquid crystal cells.

Due to the edge-lit backlight, there were a few streaks seen on the screen. But the company said that they can be eliminated by improving technologies in the future. The luminance, contrast and frame frequency of the panel are 400cd/m2, 5,000:1 and 120Hz, respectively.

Samsung Electronics also showcased two ultra-slim LCD panels that use the same technologies and are designed for monitors and notebook PCs, respectively. The panel for monitors is 24 inches in size and 3.5mm in thickness, pixel count and luminance are 1,920 x 1,200 and 250cd/m2, respectively. The panel for notebook PCs features a screen size of 12.1 inches, a thickness of 1.64mm and a weight of 120g. Its pixel count and luminance are 1,200 x 800 and 200cd/m2, respectively.

As for LED backlit unit for LCD TV, generally speaking, RGB LEDs, rather than white LEDs, broaden "color gamut," one of the major indices of image quality. Nevertheless, Toshiba used white LEDs for its new LCD TVs, which it claims are "the highest image quality models of Regza products."


When asked why, Toshiba’s Motomura said, "In fact, image quality is higher with a white LED backlight."


He explained it as follows. First, white LED light sources are more efficient in boosting image quality because the white balance fluctuates more easily when the light source is RGB LEDs. Second, image quality becomes more likely to degrade if the color gamut is extended more than necessary because it causes the display to render incorrect colors.


It is true that RGB LED backlights offer a wider color gamut than white LED backlights, but the color reproduction range of white LEDs is sufficient to render colors of most objects, Motomura said.


On the other hand white LED back light is mch cheaper than RGB backlit unit at least 60%!

Toshiba Unvieled Cell Regza 55"LED Backlit LCD TV


Toshiba unveiled the future of home entertainment, the CELL REGZA 55X1. This new LCD TV, the flagship of the company's REGZA line-up, offers viewers state-of-the-art picture quality, including a dynamic contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1, and supports this with ultra-high-speed processing and recording, enhanced navigation and seamless network interactivity.


The CELL REGZA 55X1 will be available in the Japanese market from the beginning of December.


The heart of CELL REGZA is Toshiba's CELL Platform. A combination of the high speed parallel processing of the Cell Broadband Engine™ 2, specially developed for demanding multimedia applications, and Toshiba's advanced image-processing algorithms, the CELL Platform achieves an arithmetic processing capability approximately 143 times 3 that of the current top-of-the-line REGZA TV, allowing it to support unrivaled image-enhancing capabilities.


These include:
·CELL Platform Super Resolution Technology that builds on Toshiba's current 4, super resolution technology to offer unmatched picture quality.
· It was a co-development of Toshiba, Sony and IBM
· Self-congruency, a dedicated process that improves image quality at the edge of the picture.
· Enhanced color and brightness balance that improves picture color and definition.
· LED backlight control system. In the CELL REGZA, the display is divided into 512 distinct areas, each with individually controlled lighting. Luminance is pushed to an industry high 5 of 1250cd/m2, 2.5 times the level of typical TVs, and the dynamic contrast ratio6 is an astonishing 5,000,000:1.


It can display 8 channels at one time.


Another distinguishing feature of CELL REGZA is its storage capacity: a 3-terabyte (TB)7 hard disk drive. Two terabytes of capacity are dedicated to the CELL REGZA's "time-shift machine,"8 which can simultaneously record up to approximately 26 hours of programming for up to eight channels9 of digital terrestrial broadcasts. The time-shift machine allows viewers to catch up on missed programs simply by pressing the "time-shift machine" button on the remote control.
With the ability to store a massive amount of recorded programs, a fast, easy search function is essential.


Toshiba delivers with "roaming navigation." This allows viewers to find and display information on recorded, current and future programs simply by inserting an identifier—the title, person's name, genre or related keywords.


The CELL REGZA consists of a striking, slim monitor and a stylish tuner that also integrates the hard disk drive. Both have a smoked aluminum finish, achieved with an alumite10 deposition process that lends the design a feeling of luxury. The remote controller is finished in the same way.Drawing on some 80 years of experience in TV technology, and on synergies between its visual products, semiconductor and storage device businesses, Toshiba has developed CELL REGZA not only as the flagship model of its REGZA series, but also as a statement of the future of the LCD TV.


This is the show case of Toshiba Top of the line of his prior announcement of massive production of LCD TV with LED Backlit. The mid range and lower range TV are made in Taiwan by its major CM Capal (30%).

There has been a lot of effort in makeing borderless TV or display in some of the concert hall in the past, not possible until LED TV is made commercialized large enough to 150". The current LED Back light technology would futher enhance such kind of TV to be beautiful, truly Hi fedility in picture reproduction, colour and contrast that riches highest standard in the market.

This is definitely Direct back Lit LED as it does nt even need an EDGE at all!!

It's a close fight between the two Korean chaebols as far as the panel bezel depth is concerned. The SL90 edges ahead of the current Samsung LED-edgelit models by a hair with a 0.9mm margin. LG 42" borderless TV is selling at HKD$20,800.00 in Hong Kong.

10 Points on LED TV

LED TV has become the new prized entertainment item for some households. It has created hot topics at the consumer electronics shops, Laser, Fortress or Broadway in Hong Kong. There is big promotion programme launched by Samsung at the darkest day of the economic meltdown beginning of the year, as they believed the people could consider to buy a better TV and whole family would sit down and watch the video porgramme rather than to go out for spending their money, I think this was a good timing and always Samsung has a bold marketing motive in sales in their history.

Now it is the time for LG who is coming up as a close follower for the promotion.

I have this experience, went to the shop talking to the same Sale people in Fortress Shop, before that guy was promoting Samsung LED TV and saying that this is top one brand in TV and they have the best technology for LED, no question not to buy from them. In August, I talked to same guy again I said how about LG, he said LG is the best choice as they are all made in Korean with good Korean Quality where Samsung LED was made in China!! Not as good quality as LG…. I was puzzled, how come they could distorted the picture in such a shop prior do two months time.
I saw that they are running the promotion on LG, not to focus on Samsung anymore!
They might have some instructions from the top management!?

One Staff engineer from a big company asked to show him where the LED TV is in the Broadway. It seemed to me he does not know what LED TV is?…. I was thinking that Samsung has already created the Sales Gadget to create a terms that has triggered something NEW and make such as an attraction for more new comers to search for more information on LED TV, at least they want to find out what the LED TVs are…

I am trying to illustrate that what I relate about LED TV is all about and what should we do about it in coming future to select the TV…

“LED TV” is in fact not a proper term to describe the Samsung new TV as Original LED TV means the entire TV screen is configurated and built by thousand pieces of LED. Most conventional LCD TVs use cold cathode fluorescent lamps or CCFLs for the backlighting. However, the LED TVs use light emitting diodes or LED as a backlight. One of the main challenges with the light emitting diode is the fact that it is too big for pixels on a television screen. So if someone tells you that the equipment is an LED TV, it is never going to be a true one and is likely to have a combination of other technology as well. The current main use of a true LED technology is for massive screens such as those that are used at sports stadiums, train terminal and department stores.

But now all we see is the LCD TV with LED backlit unit, so this is not appropriate by right to use “LED TV” to describe the TV. So this is only LCD TV which has been in the market for 10 years already, nothing is new.

1. What is LED Backlit unit?
LCD TV has to be light up at back to illuminate the TV Screen and to boost up the colour contrast. That is traditionally being broadly using CCFL as a standard material to illuminate.

2. What is CCFL?
CCFL is Cold Cathode Florescent Light, is in fact the Same kind of
Light fixture we are using at home. It contains certain amount of Mercury and is not advisable to be disposed without special treatment but who can do much now as there are Billions of such kind of light tubes in the world. That is why European is trying to stop this kind of product by replacing with better environmental friendly product such as LED… but not able to do it yet as the Efficacy of LED is still not able to be marketable in large scale for this Hugh light and illumination market.

3. How many types of CCFL in the market, the CCFL in general being used by most
Of the TV makers, and HCFL by Sony which has a effect of thinner tube of CFL and a better power efficiency, which goes in par with LED.

4. How many types of LED Back lit structure and design?
White TopLED LED is mounting on the edge and LED shine through the light guide to the centre of the LCD TV. Edge lit from side, either 4 sides tow vertical sides, tow top and bottom and even only one at the bottom side. Edge type is best for its thin TV outer profile, down to 5mm! But there is not local dimming. And closer looking into it you can see that the light is brighter at the side as comparing with the Centre of the screen. 4. Edge-lit TVs are really thin, but uniformity suffers. Direct white LED back lit, that is a better design with the screen being sectionized into say 400 smaller area, each contain say 10-20 LED in groups, so in short the Screen is lit up by these thousands of LED, the control is more complex and the effect is able to have Local dimming and best to control the blackness of the screen thus by right this can achieves a DCR Dynamic Contrast Ratio n of 3,000,000 to 1. So as the quality of the TV should be better in the Edge lit design. The cost of the Direct Back lit is much higher than Edge... and it is thicker in the construction the market Leader is able to make it as thin as 10mm.

5. The is another one using RGB LED on the direct back lit panels, this RGB is three colour Red, Green and Blue LED, the control is even more complex than the White LED Direct Back lit unit, it nay use up a Computer to control the colour brightness, balance in the colour gamut, they might use up 3,500 LED groups each consists of RGB Leeds, those the cost of the LED Back light construction is very high but there result is rich colour especially in RED.

6. Is LED TV better in performance than Plasma TV?
From my point of view Plasma is still better as it does not rely on Back lit to illuminate up the LCD TV. It has it own lighting units as pixel to show the brightness. It has a better reproduction of the original Colour as from the signal input is. This is more or less than same As LP Vs. CD…. LP has a true musical tone than CD, no matter what kind of technology you use, That is the physics Nothing can change but of course commercial side there is 100,000 ways to destroy LP, but the human ears I the final Judge! But Plasma TV was blamed for it short life time, now the new Plasma no mater Samsung, Pioneer, They can stay safe without any problem for 20,000 hours. But the Plasma is hot as of consume at least 2X more power than the LED TV.

7. One downside to local dimming is an effect called "blooming," where brighter areas bleed into darker ones and lighten adjacent black levels. This effect varies widely from model to model; it's pretty noticeable on the Toshiba 46SV670U, for example, and much more difficult to notice on the Samsung 8500. Certain shops are selling at about HK$125,500. I have been asking them for the price of the shop’s demo as I do not mind the TV has been running for 3 months as run in… As it does tell me that has been running no problem for that period of time, He offered me HK$98,000.00!

My opinion, we will see more LED TVs in coming few years and the CCFL back lit will stay safe for at east 4 years before they become extinct!

On the other side, Panasonic has announced not to manufacture CRT TV and his factory was sold to China. In China, there are 60% of TV are still CRT. There is still a huge Market for China and some third world Countries.

Philips new 42PFL9803 Flat TV Goes LED Back lit

The new 42PFL9803 FlatTV from Philips won the “European LCD-TV 2008-2009” award from the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA). According to Philips, its 42-inch set "delivers levels of contrast and motion smoothness never achieved by an LCD before."
Philips is claiming an astonishingly high 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.

The LED LUX system comprises a total of 1,152 RGB LEDs, split into 128 segments. Each of the 8 rows contains 16 segments, with 9 LEDs in each segment. These LEDs can be individually dimmed to precisely control the output of each pixel. So, even if a segment contains both bright and dark portions, the pixel values of the dark portions can be dimmed to deliver optimum contrast performance.

Samsung selected NXP PNX55120 Video Co-processor for their TVs

NXP Semiconductors announced that Samsung Electronics has selected the NXP PNX5120 video co-processor for its 240Hz LCD panels to empower TV OEMs` 240Hz Full HDTV on 3 September.

These panels, currently in mass production by Samsung Electronics, take advantage of NXP`s Motion Accurate Picture Processing (MAPP2) technology and full motion compensated up-conversion to deliver high-definition action scenes that are smoother and more realistic than ever before. The 240Hz refresh rate is twice the speed of current 120Hz TV sets and quadruple that of standard HDTVs.

Samsung Electronics has been the leader in 240Hz panel manufacturing. 240Hz LCD panels showcase the enhanced HD viewing experience made possible by the PNX5120 and NXP MAPP2 technology.

I remember my first TV was dated in 1962. It was "Bush" made in the Britian, It was HKD$1100.00. That was about 4 Months salary of my Father! We have only one Channel " Rediffusion " English or Chinese for TV broadcasting corporation. And we have to pay for HKD$20.00 a month.


In 1967, The Colour TV era came with the launch of TVB Television Broadcast. Over the past 40 years, we have been using CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) as the TV set display which was invented in the 19 Century!

We can see not much breakthrough till 1995 for Plasma TV and PDP huge panel Display TV system. Now we all know it is time for the LCD TV with much faster response than some 6 years ago. And The latest technology is LED back Lit... with an end product of sleek slim design and thin profile of 5 mm in Thickness. that can be hung on wall. Power saving and have very high DCR Dynamic Contrast Ratio of up to 3 millions to one.


LED will be the main stream for backlit., and more advance video control will be designed for better video speed, colour and contrast... cost of TV will be lowered at less 15% a year udner the same size!


From now on, the new product development will come faster and have shorter life time.

What will be the new TV look like, instant You tube, net work connection, direct playback on all kinds of Video formats , or a hard disk to store up, auto recording on certain programme with newer system replacing G-code? Or built in Blue Ray players. Digital broadcast will be launched in 2012. Hisense- China First LED Backlit LCD TV


Hisense is China's first company to manufacture the LED (backlight) LCD TV.


Hisense has been actively expanding its LED backlight module production line extensively. This company has itw own R&D centre and resources to maintain the centre. From the point manufacturability and Technology level Hisense is havingm this may be one of the most powrrful LVD TV Manufacturing house in China.


To pursue for more revenue with the Samsung LG in Korea and Toshiba in Japan. And of course the Visio in Taiwan.


On July 9, Hisense’s leading Chinese flat panel TV producer unveiled the world’s thinnest 42 inch LED (light-emitting diode) TV. The 55mm thick TLM42T08GP, which has been put into mass production, uses auto background light control to improve display quality.


Starting from August 1st in more than 100 major cities and 8,000 home appliance stores, Hisense launched a large-scale promotional campaign called "consumers buying Hisense blue media LED get a 1,000 Yuan return", which aims at further expanding Hisense’s market share.

At the year’s lowest economic time, China’s Six major TV manufacturers went to Taiwan on June 1 to procure TFT LCD panels. These six companies include Hisense, Konka, Skyworth, SVA-NEC, XOCECO and Xiong Mao. This was likely the first time that such group of six companies made a joint procurement activity in Taiwan.

The two LCD manufacturers that will benefit are AU Optronics (NYSE:AUO) and Chi Mei Optoelectronics (TPE:3009), the two largest LCD suppliers in Taiwan. AUO and CMO would certainly been guaranteed that their production plan can be streamlined with such foreign purchase from these China TV Manufacturers!

This is a sign of reprise on my earlier point saying that the 2nd Tier of LCD TV with LED back lit was making the biggest step into actions! Let’s watch out and see the game of the LCD TV price war that would happen in Q3 2010!

Sony would invest 1B for collaboration with Sharp for manicuring LCD. Sharp has LED factory in Indonesia and that is a way to lower the manufacturing cost. They might seek another place in SE Asia for reduce the regional risk for LED manufacturing.

98B Pieces of LED is needed for LED backlit LCD TV in 2010

Due to strong demand on LED for LCD Back lit. Taiwan’s (LED) and Korean chipmakers are planning to boost output next year.

Industry analysts estimate that the shipments of LED-lit LCD TVs to top 15-23 million systems worldwide next year, likely straining supplies of high-bright blue chips, which are essential for making white-light backlight modules.

Executives of Epistar estimated Taiwanese chipmakers will need to produce 200 more metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) chambers as to relieve excessive demands in 2010.

Each machine can produce five to six million chips, bringing the total output of the 200 machines to 1-1.2 billion chips a month or 12-14.4 billion chips a year.

We calculate that LED TVs will need an additional number of 10 billion high-bright blue chips throughout next year base on an assumption of an average *600 LED per LCD TV; 600x20,000,000=12 KKK pieces! You may not know how many is this 10B LEDs are!

We estimate that we will have 98B pieces of LED in 2010 and we will produce about 78B LED in 2009, that is an increase of 26%!

Epistar is said to add 70 new machines next year and have booked 30 new machines. Industry analysts estimate the company can afford to buy 100 new machines in consideration of the US$545 million in cash it has now. Formosa plans to add 30 MOCVD chambers next year.
Tekcore Corp. is raising capital to increase the number of machines to 34
Huga Optotech plans to buy 10 new machines this year and increase the number to 58 next year from this year’s 55.
Huga has co-founded a joint venture in Taiwan with Seoul Semiconductor Co., Ltd. to make backlight chips for LCD TVs and notebook computers.
Samsung would likely add another 90-100 MOCVD in 2010 for meeting the Demand.

Sony, JVC and Panasonic TV

The manufacturers will be offering LED backlit LCD TVs that run on less power and have Internet connectivity. Sony is hopes to launch its new LED backlit TV this coming spring. Sony claims that the TV will offer the industry's lowest power consumption.

In fact Sony’s HCFL is consuming lesser power than his side lit LED TV. So this new BLU TV might have even lesser power consumption rating. That may be the industry’s lowest power LED LCD TV. The TV reportedly utilizes an efficient backlight and special filter that passes the light through more easily, most of the conventional LCD TV filter passes some what 15-20% of the light only.

Panasonic will offer a new lower power plasma TV that uses half the power of previous models. Even thought the Plasma TVs will not be as efficient as Sony's LED backlit LCD TVs.

JVC (Victor of Japan) also announced plans to release an LED backlit LCD TV in 2009. Victor Co. of Japan, or JVC, aims to release in 2009 an LCD TV with an LED backlight. LEDs are highly energy-efficient with a super light weight LCD screen deign, so this product is expected to use less power than conventional LCD TVs. But we do not have data see how it is lower power than Sony’s or not!?
