Some of the new LED lighiting installations in China



There are more and more interior decroations have been using LED as to replace the Incandescent lamp and CFLs as for LEDs' versitile programmable colour and intensity.
These are few examples...
All the sucessful installation acts as a promotion for these kinds of LED illumination itself as they are funny to watch, programmable colour to match the mood requirement...Longer life time and significant energy saving... Again, it is at least 10 year behind as for Hong Kong to compare with China. The Hong Kong Building designers, Architects, Lighting contractors, wake up and make up the City with More LEDs please. This City requires more vibrant and dynamic colours.

LED should be used instead of CFL in Hong Kong's Lighting Illumination

Technology revolution that lights up LED as the future lighting source.
European, Australian and Canadian Law bans the use of incandescent lamp in 2009-2012
HK shall likely ban Incandescent of 25W-65W in 2011.

However the Government should not impose law to stop using incandescent lamps as there are certain applications that it is best fit for the purpose. As Incandescent lamp CRI is 100, whereas CFL and LED is only 80-90 only. Incandescent lamp work perfectly in colour reading or verification for printing lab and Decorative chandeliers which require a single point source of light.

CFL vapor that contain mercury is 2,000 times higher that human people can be tolerate. So when we break it in air that can be harmful to human beings when inhaling. LED seems to be the best choice for replacing incandescent lamp in term of energy saving, Life time, safety for our heath and less expensive at the end of the year.

LED replacement lamp for interior lighting is still considered rather expensive, a branded 7W LED light bulb is around HKD300. However, we can expect that the price if the lamp will drop at rate of -30% a year. So within 2 years time the ASP of a 7 Watt LED lamp will be in the range of HKD100-120. That is about three times of the CFL in similar power rating. Non-branded one is selling at even at only 30% price of the branded one in Hong Kong.

Yesterday, City University Electronics engineering faculty Hui Shui Yuen criticized HK Chief Executive Ronald Tsang should promote LED instead of CFL for Hong Kong.

I think to certain extent we need to have a long term road map for total green lighting solution, CFL may be the current majority for lighting and LED is the coming future standard! Incandescent Lamp will be less competitive comparing with LED with a price being affortable and reasonable. When more people understand the pros and cons of them and at same time LED are being broadly used, incandescant lamp will eliminate it self.

So, I will prefered to buy MasterLED as the life time is 50K hours at 7W. Then Osram Parathom Classic A55 LED bulb and last the DULUX CFL almost the same price of A55 but with only 10,000 hours Life time!

World First Water Cooling LED bulb


These Hydralux-4 bulbs are really nice, and the 360 degree lighting acts similarly to a small incandescent light bulb. This is pretty revolutionary in the industry as most LED bulbs are directional. As most of the LED bulb is unidirectional with limited light coverage.

Are LED bulb are rated to be used in Hazardous Condition (Class 1 division 1 areas)?
No.

Will your LED light bulb work on a Dimmer?
No, we do not recommend using our LED light bulbs on a dimmer switch, this type of switch can potentially cause damage to the bulb. Some dimmer switches do not have a true "off" position and may continue to illuminate an LED bulb when turned all the way down because LED bulbs use so little power. Unless the LED buld is specified can be used with Dimmer.

Can your LED bulb be used with day/night Photo cells?
Due to the low power consumption of the LED bulbs they do not work with all of the photo cell light controls found in light fixtures. On some models they will not turn off and with others they may blink. Because of this we do not recommend using them with a light fixture that is activated by a photo cell. It is possible for the bulbs to be damaged from the blinking.

Why some of the LED bulb does not work properly in extreme temperature?
Any temperature below 14° F or above 122 F may cause a LED bulb to flicker, dim, change color, or cease to function. Once the LED bulb is returned to an operational environment it should began to work properly. But when the LED bulb is placed in extreme high temperature, it may not be able to function even returned to an operational environment as the electronics component may be damaged due to overheating. They should not be used in an enclosed fixture with a cover over it. This will raise the temperature and kill the electronics circuitry.

What does PAR means?
PAR is also a unit of bulb measurement. In this system of lamp identification the first number listed denotes the maximum diameter of the lamp expressed as a number of 1/8's of an inch. For example, some common sizes are: PAR-38 (4.75") PAR-30 (3.75") PAR-20 (2.5")
Most of the available bulbs currently are “medium” or “Edison” base; which means they will fit into most sockets in the US.

What is the AC voltage tolerance of your LED bulb?
That should be +/-10 % if not specified. In fact some type of the latest design works from 85-260V as they have an inverter to control the Current into the LED.

Does your LED bulb emit UV lights?
No, but you should never point an LED light into your eyes. The light is very bright and could cause damage.

Why Don’t incandescent bulb last longer than it should be?
Some incandescent bulbs do last longer but there are some downsides to them. One way to make incandescent last longer is to increase the thickness of the filament so that it will not deteriorate as quickly. The down side to this is that it takes more energy to heat the filament and the filament does not glow as bright. These types of long-life bulbs typically glow an orange color. If you purchase a long-life incandescent bulb you might find that a 100 watt bulb only puts out the light of a 75 watt bulb while it consumes 100 watts. The amount of money wasted in energy with this type of bulb means you would have been better off purchasing a regular bulb.
Another way to make an incandescent last longer is to use a rare gas called Krypton gas; and no, it does not come from Superman's home planet. Krypton gas is denser than the standard gas used (Argon gas) and helps to keep the filament from deteriorating as fast. You will find that "premium" incandescent light bulbs contain Krypton gas, but unfortunately cost more money.

Can your LED bulbs be used at outdoor?
All of our LED bulbs are for indoor use only except where noted. Technically it is possible if special attention made for the dsisgn, moreover the Mine lampo are all changign to LED as for safety purposed as it has less change fot creating fire that trigger gas insider the mine!
What is the size of the screw base of the Edison base LED bulb? The size is E-26. This size works in all common fixtures in Hong Kong.

What is the proper way of dispose of used LED bulb?
Follow your local disposal procedure for electronic products with circuit boards in them.

Do LED bulbs contain Mercury as CLFs?
No.

If you are eager save more on the electic bill each month, an energy saver LED light bulb is your choice. My house uses 10 only. And by simple calculation, I may save HKD500 a year base on running LED 10 hours a day as to compare with CFL light bulb.

LED Cities

Studies suggest that a complete conversion to the lights could decrease carbon dioxide emissions from electric power use for lighting by up to 50 percent in just over 20 years; in the United States, lighting accounts for about 6 percent of all energy use. A recent report by McKinsey & Company cited conversion to LED lighting as potentially the most cost effective approaches to tackling global warming using existing technology.

LED lighting was once relegated to digital display in laboratory, public ultilities office, Stock exchange display, basketball scoreboards, traffic lights. But as a result of rapid developments in the technology, it is now poised to become common on streets and in buildings, as well as in homes and offices. Some American cities, supported by LED companies promoted images with name of LED City including Ann Arbor, Mich., and Raleigh, N.C., are using the lights to illuminate streets and parking garages, and dozens more are exploring the technology.

There is a Website 18seconds.org is calculating and updating the number of purchased CFL light bulbs since 1 Jan 2007 in cities and states of USA. It said that it takes just 18 seconds to change an incandescent light bulb to CFL bulb as anintermediate transition for LED illumination.

From the data, Washington is the first Oregon the second and Wisconsin the third largest State as users for CFL.

LED is 2 times more efficient as compact fluorescent bulbs, currently the standard for greener lighting. Unlike compact fluorescents, LEDs turn on quickly and are compatible with dimmer switches. And while CFL contain mercury, which requires special disposal, LED bulbs contain no toxic elements, and last much 3 times longer.

Revolution of Illumination


LED was one of the greatest Invention in 20 Century, where Incandescent light bulb was no question one of great inventions in 19 Century. It may be time to ban Edison's venerable, now vilified, light bulb. European leaders, green pundits and the widely reported light bulb provisions of the U.S. Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 all urgently push the abandonment of incandescent bulbs. People started collect 100W incandescent light bulb as after another 20 years, the youngster may not understand what Light bulb was. As those young blokes under 25 years ago may not see what Vinyl LP is although this is still the best format for music and audio reproduction in term of high fidelity in this world of technology. As in the Hi end Audio market 20% of the player has his own LP equipment and 40% with vacuum Tubes amplifier which almost went extinct in 1986. Incandescent light bulbs will not the same case as Vinyl as its intrinsic low efficacy will kill itself.


Semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) are finally on the verge of having the capability to radically alter the entire lighting landscape with staggering improvements in both lighting efficiency and efficacy. The high-power LED emerges directly from the same semiconductor, digital infrastructure and intellectual property that brought us iPhones, laptops, hybrid cars, PSP, Xboxes, Net book and LED Back light LCD TV. Though the word "Revolution" has been devalued by overuse, quite irony, the LED is probably only the third revolution in illumination technology since the invention of fire at Stone Age. Until now, there have been only three illumination technologies: fire, from first rubbing stick to produce, torches, tallow and wax candles and, later, whale oil lamps; kerosene lamp, electric incandescence, famously perfected in 1879.

About 12 billion electric lights use Edison bulbs; one third is in the U.S. So, lighting up the world consumes about 2 trillion kilowatt-hours annually. This is in fact equivalent of nearly a billion tons of coal annually. In the U.S., half of that is in fact coal. U.S. lighting uses the equivalent of 50% of the energy used by all cars on American roads.


In Hong Kong, Electricity Bill domestic illuminations accounts 22%, Air Con for 34%, fridge for 14%, and TV take as much as 7.3% of total monthly electricity bill amount. Over the year, there is practical no raise of electricity fare. The cost of illumination has almost collapsed. It is 1,000 times cheaper to light up a room today than at the beginning of the 1910’s, and 10,000 times cheaper than in 1850. Consequently, appetites have soared for the central product of illumination technology, lumens. Humans consume 40,000 trillion lumen-hours per year.


LEDs are fabricated from various concoctions of "compound" semiconductors, mainly gallium and indium. All older forms of illumination use brute force to heat something till it glows. The central difference with an LED is that photons are emitted by designing exquisitely precise semiconductor junctions, tuned just so to employ efficient quantum phenomena that emits photons. It's the quantum equivalent of using butane lighter instead of rubbing sticks to start a fire.

Commercial LEDs were quickly introduced by 1968 after Nick Holonyak, a GE engineer nvented it in 1962. Early ones dribbled out pathetically small flows of lumens and were ridiculously inefficient, converting fewer watts to lumens than even the notoriously inefficient incandescent bulb. The tiny, solid, robust and very long-lived LED was ideal for instrument and indicator lights, cockpit of an aircraft and my expensive Boluva LED digital watches. Price of a 2nd hand Toyota car in 1978.

Over the years, scientists and wafer epitaxial engineers rapidly developed the machinery of photonic semiconductors, suitable manufacturing process and better selection of material. Today's LEDs are 1,200 times more efficient than they were in 1968. LEDs have followed called Haitz's Law, named after the LED researcher Roland Haitz. The law says LED brightness doubles every 18 to 24 months.

Currently, LEDs have already achieved 100 lumens per watt, Incandescent bulbs yield some 15 lumens a watt, CFLs about 80. Without considering the cost impact, in fact, LED is the time for replacing all illumination world wide!

Applications for LEDs have followed their rising power and declining cost, from instrument displays in the early days, to traffic signals and automobile brake lights and interiors, to back-lighting mobile phones and LCD screens, signature decorations. The very first few Blue 5mm LED Vertical lamp was selling at USD50.00 a piece and how is about USD0.2 in the retail electronics shops.


Annual global sales of high-brightness LEDs already total $5.5 billion with 400 million on Illuminations, even before invading the 40,000 tera-lumen market for general illumination. General illumination is currently supplied about equally by incandescent bulbs (dominant in residential markets) and fluorescents (dominant in commercial buildings).


With the lumen power in hand and costs declining, there is one last hurdle for LEDs to overcome in order to conquer general illumination. The reason most people have resisted and will resist using CFLs, and that also currently impedes LED adoption (particularly for indoor lighting) is the quality of the light. CFLs must achieve the light quality of incandescence to enjoy wider adoption.
All lumens are no more equal than all calories are. The eye, like the palate, is exquisitely sensitive to quality. 500 hundred calories at beef doesn't taste the same as 500-calorie foie gras. 500 lumens from a CFL is visually harsh and makes food and people look unnatural, compared with the same 1,000 from Edison's incandescence.


Optical scientists cleverly named the visible mix rendered by the colors in light the Color Rendering Index. The CRI gold standard is numerically 100, the color of pleasing Edison incandescence. A CRI below 90 is noticeably nasty to the eye. CFLs produce and are essentially stuck.


But LED lights have been inching up the CRI curve. LED Lighting Fixtures, for example, just started selling a 12-watt product with a pleasing 92 CRI that looks like a standard 60-watt indoor floodlight and uses 50% less energy than a CFL.


Longer life time 100,000 hours for better cost obvert the years of the life time, small and robust, can be used on various compact and dynamic application such as automobile aircraft, electronic controllable intensity and colour variation, faster response for display such as Back light unit for LCD TV, automobile front lamp for Safety concern.


CFLs contain tiny amounts of mercury. Individually not much, but billions add up, and no one really believes recycling will keep all that mercury out of landfills.


Obama is promoting the green source of energy, does not man he does not has the point, as all kind of wars after the Vietnam is mostly related to oil resources A clever move would be invest more GPD into the greener energy production rather than on the military expensive. That may have a better return., and human will rely les sin the oil which would be the major income in the Middle East. Thought its is easy to say but hard to make it materialization, as when less people buy oil, they will automatically reduce the oil price and if the oil price drops to certain level, that will have leverage effect on running for new greener energy sources.


Any way, only national decision for long term could bring LED into real substitutes for CFL and incandescent lamps. When I bought my first Motorola star TAC hand phone in 1990, it was almost $2,000, no one who imagine that the kind of hand phone will eventually easier to buy one and much faster to expand his user network than the traditional land line in 10 years time.


Every says the LED cost if high, and from all history of electronics life cycle, the LED ASP is dropping as an average of 12% with volume of 20% more producing each year, and the ASP drop is more eminent over the last three years. We will see after 2012, an High-power LED will be just 20% of Today’s.

As we can see that the technology will bring down the price, three years ago the most extensively used Die bonder AD830 in LED industry was running at 10,000 an hour, and now the new die bonder is running at 18,000 unit a hour for the same type of package under same process. I should say the LED equipment supplier would be one of major contribution to lower the ASP of the LEDs.

This is the LED product from Philips for Domestic home application.
Essentially it is a very simply lighting device but is one of those gadgets that reaches a wide audience.
The idea behind this device is that it allows you to pick from a host of colours that compliments your mood creating a custom ambiance in which ever room you have it in. The Colour generation is immaginative and there can have many colour that you have never seen can be generated by a hand held remote control.

True Power Saver LED ligthing











This is a LED lamp made up of 24 LED of 150millwatts Vertical LED lamps, built with a Motion sensor to detect an turn on, after say a few minute of no more motion, the LED lampo will turn of automatically
Made in Foshan, about 3W in power consumption , HKD130,00 each.
Since the soruce fo LED is unknown we need to test on it performance and effectiveness of the motion sensor.

Attached is X-rate picture of the inner ocnstruction of the Lamp, it consists of two coil, one 14 Lead chip, one capacitors and some wires.

I go Green LED Lighting at Home!


I have been searching the whole Ap Liu Street, and shops nearby West Kowloon Centre, finally I found one shop "Cosmos Telecom" at G/F 169 Ap Liu Street. They have all kinds of LED that I am looking for, and they are not the same stuff as the street store and you may not find them tomorrow.

The Shop keeper, likely the shop owner, he told me they make their own LED light bulb using Luxeon, K2 LEDs!


Well, I said "show me!" He showed me reels of K2 LED, packs of Cree XRE, Packs of Seoul Opto LED. Seems that they are keen on the quality using the real good stuff!


I bought two K2 X3 3W LED bulbs, now I am testing at home. If that is OK , I may replace all in my house. Price is HKD136.00 each. They also have Philips MasterLed but it is not the same connector as we used to use in HK. So I had to give up!


This is the first step to LED illumination at home!
